When you get new carpet installed, you’re determined to protect it all costs, but then life happens—and that means stains happen. How do I remove and prevent pet stains?

If you have pets, chances are that you have pet stains. When you’re tackling these kinds of stains, it’s important to remember that your treatment has to be more than cosmetic. First, blot the carpet until any dampness from the stain itself is gone. Then, use a carpet cleaning solution designed specifically for pet stains to dampen the area, and blot it dry again. Repeat this process until the visual signs of the stain are gone. To remove odor, and to reduce the chances that your pet will come back to the same spot, spray the area with a 1:1 mixture of white vinegar and water. After allowing it to sit for a few minutes, blot it dry and then use apply baking soda. Pour a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and dish soap over the area and work it deep into the carpet. Once the area is dry and solution has soaked in, vacuum to remove any leftover baking soda.

Can coffee stains be cleaned?

When you spill coffee, blot up as much of it as possible, being careful not to spread the stain by scrubbing. Mix vinegar and water with a few drops of dish soap in a spray bottle, and spray the stain thoroughly. Rinse the area with water, and blot it dry. Repeat this process until the coffee can no longer be seen.

Does red wine cause permanent stains?

Red wine stains strike fear in the heart of homeowners, but with fast attention, they can easily be removed. Blot excess wine from the area of the stain, and then pour cold water onto the stain. Blot again, then repeat the process of saturating with water and blotting until you no longer get any wine on the cloth. Create a baking soda paste using a 3:1 ratio, and apply it to the stain. When the paste dries, vacuum it up.
